But despite those differences, these are 5 rules that every owner needs to know when it comes to dog training! In
Paws For Thought!
1st December is the start of Summer in Australia and we know just how scorching our Summers can be. The things that Aussie pet people need to be aware of are many and varied, the most common of which are heatstroke and paw-burn. We'll leave heatstroke on the back-burner for the time being and today we'll discuss paw-burn. The 'awesome' thing about paw-burn (if we dare say such a thing) is that it means that we're making sure our dogs are getting out for their walks (Yay!!)

Training Early Prevents Problems!
No matter how old our dogs are or where they come from, they're constantly adjusting their behaviour based on what's going on around them. A puppy has a certain way of behaving with his mum and siblings and then, when he or she moves in with a human family, needs to work out how to behave there - the rules are different, the play is different, communication is different. It's no great surprise then that the pup's behaviour also becomes different. Then you have rescue dogs -

Train a Happy, Healthy, Obedient Dog
Here at Mutts with Manners in Sydney, we believe that the key to having an amazing canine companion – one who thrives as a part of your family and obeys the boundaries set by the pack leader (that’s you!) – is to get into the mind of your dog. Our goal is to teach people about their dogs – how to read them and understand their needs, developing a trusting relationship with them so that they become a true member of the family. We recently shared some of our own dog training ti
What do I need? Dog trainer or behaviour consultant?
Understanding the difference between dog training (obedience) and dog behaviour issues will help you to understand what is best for you. We're often contacted by people wanting to have obedience training yet their dog is jumping up, digging holes, aggressing, or one of many other issues which cannot be effectively addressed in a group training situation. Dog training or obedience training is about teaching your dog skills - these are things like recall (getting your dog to '

Understanding Dog Training
You know, the longer we at Mutts with Manners have worked in dog training, the more we've come to understand that dogs rarely have 'behavioural problems'; dogs generally are just doing what dogs do - normal dog behaviour just doesn't tend to fit into human society. Take toilet training, for example - in a dog world, if you need to toilet you just move away a little bit and do your thing. This, however, doesn't work for us as although our dog may not be toileting where we ar

Handsome but Pushy!
Tyson is a very handsome boy but the only way they could stop him from rampaging through the house was to keep him out with a baby-gate. He also thinks that killing the rake is lots of fun and will steal washing not just from the line but even from the laundry basket. In our first lesson we have set boundaries so that he knows that he just isn't allowed inside (even without the baby-gate). Teaching him not to attack the rake isn't about teaching him to ignore it but teachi

Why wait to train them?!
Puppy training, adult dog training, rescue dog training - why do we wait before we train our dogs? I hear people saying "he'll grow out of it" or "maybe it'll get better once she settles in" but usually this is just time where our dogs' inappropriate behaviours are becoming reinforced. The sooner we start guiding our dogs the less confusion we create for them. Now get out there and work with that beautiful furry beast and help them to be the best they can be! :-) #puppytrai
