Dog Obedience Training Sydney – from basic obedience to off-leash control

Personal One-on-One Training for Real-World Results

Tired of being pulled down the street? Embarrassed when your dog ignores you at the park? Struggling with a new baby, another dog, or apartment living? Professional dog obedience training transforms everyday chaos into calm, confident control.

Dogs rarely have behavioural problems; dogs generally are doing what dogs do - normal dog behaviour just doesn't fit into human society.  Sadly, most people think that their pups or dogs will grow out of it but instead they'll grow into it - because it's a natural dog behaviour.  So the sooner you train your dog as to what you want, the less stress, damage and cost will be involved. And the more fun you can have together...

Common Obedience Challenges We Solve

🚶 Can't Enjoy Walks Anymore?

Does your dog: Pull you down the street on walks? Jump up on passers-by or pull toward dogs or cats? Ignore you when you call them? Not listen to basic commands? Get overexcited and won't calm down? Play too roughly with people or other dogs?

Our one-on-one obedience training teaches you how to guide your dog in progressively more challenging situations.

For dogs who need to learn:

  • Recall and walking commands, including off-leash response with distractions

  • Loose leash walking (no pulling), despite excitement

  • Wait at doors and gates, road etiquette – no commands needed

  • Not pick things up off the footpath, steal other dog’s balls, or raiding people’s picnics at the park

  • Settled and calm behaviour in the car, at cafes, etc

Perfect For:

  • Active owners who hike, camp, or beach walk

  • Dogs who will be off-leash frequently

  • Families - where supervision of children means that dogs need to respond well

  • Competition obedience preparation also available

Why Obedience Training Matters: Every dog needs a foundation of good manners. Obedience training isn't just about tricks - it's about communication between you and your dog. When your dog understands what you want and how to earn rewards, life becomes easier and more enjoyable for everyone.

  • Teach you how to communicate clearly

  • Practice in real-life situations

  • Build gradually from easy to challenging environments

Timeline: Most dogs master basic commands within 1-2 weeks with consistent practice with about 3-4 sessions needed for strong, off leash response despite distractions.

🏠 Chaos at Home? Essential House Manners

The Problem: Jumping on guests, rushing through doorways, begging at meals, stealing food from counters, refusing to settle when you need them calm, not waiting before getting out of the car.

Why These Matter: These aren't just annoying habits - they're about safety, respect, and being able to include your dog in daily life.

Skills We'll Cover:

  • Wait at Doorways & Gateways, even Road Etiquette! - No rushing out (safety issue with roads and escaping)

  • Settle on Mat/Towel - Perfect for cafes, visiting friends, having guests over

  • Polite Greetings that dogs can manage - Four paws on the floor when greeting people

  • Impulse control - not picking up food or stealing other dog's balls

Timeline: 2-4 sessions depending on how many behaviours you want to address. Most improve within first week.

🏢 Apartment Dog Training Sydney - Urban Living Made Easy

Why Apartment Dogs Need Special Training: Thin walls mean barking bothers neighbours. Shared hallways and elevators require excellent behaviour. Limited bathroom access means reliable toileting routines are crucial.

Our Apartment Dog Training Covers:

  • Designated Toilet Area Training - Balcony, specific outdoor spot, or pee pad training

  • Quiet & Calm Behaviour - Preventing barking and noise complaints

  • Elevator & Hallway Manners - Polite behaviour in shared spaces - dealing with challenges in small spaces

  • Teaching contentment in smaller spaces - Mental stimulation when outdoor time is restricted

  • Neighbour-Friendly Living - Preventing common apartment dog issues before they start

Perfect for High-density dwellers

Timeline: 1-2 sessions for apartment-specific training, with ongoing support as needed.

Pro Tip: Start apartment training immediately when you move in or bring your dog home - it's much easier to prevent bad habits than fix them after neighbours complain.

👶🐕 Integrating a New Family Member - Baby, Cat, Dog, or More

The Challenge: You're bringing home a baby, adopting another dog, getting a cat, or adding any new member to your household. Your dog needs to learn how to share space, respect boundaries, and adjust to the new dynamic.

Proper integration prevents jealousy, aggression, and stress. It ensures everyone stays safe and the household remains peaceful. Ideally start this training at least 2 months prior.

New Baby Preparation & Integration, and Adding Another Dog, Cat or Other Pet:

  • Teaching gentle behaviour around the baby or pet - proper introduction techniques plus impulse control (prey drive)

  • Preventing jumping when you're holding the baby or new pet - managing resource guarding and jealousy

  • Creating positive associations with new sounds and smells

  • Establishing boundaries (staying off nursery furniture, not entering nursery uninvited)

  • Managing your dog's needs while caring for a newborn, preventing jealousy

  • Establishing household hierarchy peacefully

  • Teaching appropriate play and sharing of spaces for a peaceful multi-pet household.

Timeline: 1-2 sessions. Ongoing support available.

Best Practice: Book training BEFORE bringing home the new family member when possible. Prevention is always easier than fixing problems after they've developed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does obedience training take? Basic obedience skills in just 1 session. In session 2 we start introducing distractions. 1 or 2 more sessions may be needed for advanced obedience in distracting environments (so a total of 1-4 weeks depending on goals and your commitment to training).

Is my dog too old to learn obedience? Absolutely not! The saying "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" is completely false. Adult and senior dogs often learn faster than puppies because they have better focus and impulse control. We've successfully trained dogs of all ages.

What's the difference between basic and advanced obedience? Basic obedience covers essential life skills: loose leash walking, recall, sit, settle, door manners. Advanced obedience builds on this with off-leash control, distance commands, road etiquette, and reliability in high-distraction environments. Ideal for people who hike, camp or frequently have their dogs off leash.

Can you train multiple dogs at once? Yes! We offer package discounts for multiple dog households. We'll work with each dog individually and together to establish harmony and consistent behaviour.

Do I need to do anything before the first lesson? Just be ready to learn! We'll assess your dog's current skills and your goals, then create a customised training plan. Having a list of specific situations where you want improvement helps us focus the training.

What if my dog knows commands but doesn't listen? This is very common and it's a training gap, not a stubborn dog. The dog has learned the command in one context (like inside the house) but hasn't generalised it to other situations, and often our communication leaves our dog completely confused! We'll work on reliability and consistency across different environments and distractions.

Will training work if my dog is high-energy or easily distracted? Yes! In fact, high-energy dogs often excel at training because it gives them mental stimulation. We'll teach you how to work with your dog's energy level rather than fighting against it.

What's included in a training session? Sessions typically start with a 2 hour lesson to assess current behaviour, do hands-on training with your dog, teaching you the techniques, practice time, and email support between sessions. Follow up sessions for obedience are usually 1 hour each.

"We are all getting along famously, since your visits to our house. As you know, us dogs pick up things fairly quickly, and now that my family know how to handle me things are different - it's amazing what your magic did for all of us. Lots of thanks and love.

Angel. The Dalmatian now 'Dealing with it"

"Thankyou for your help in turning Tiana from an unruly little girl into a puppy who is now easier to handle and a pleasure to take for a walk and have around the home. I am amazed at the great improvement in Tiana after only having 2 lessons with you. At one time I thought I would have to put up with a wild uncontrollable dog, but with your assistance in training her this has now all changed. Once again, thank you for all your help and guidance."
