Puppy Training Sydney

Expert In-Home Training From Just 8 Weeks of Age!

Overwhelmed by your new puppy? Worried about toilet training, biting, or separation anxiety? You're not alone - and the good news is that early puppy training prevents problems before they become habits

Your Puppy Has A Lot to Learn - Let's Make It Easy for Both of You

When your baby puppy arrives in your home, everything is new and potentially scary. Where should they toilet? What can they chew? How do they cope without mum and siblings? This is a stressful time for your new puppy, and the confusion can quickly turn into problem behaviours.

The truth is: The first few weeks set the foundation for your puppy's entire life.

Early training doesn't just stop bad habits - it prevents them from forming in the first place. It minimises stress for everyone and helps your puppy become a confident, happy, well-adjusted dog.

Common Puppy Challenges We Solve

🚽 Struggling With Toilet Training?

The Problem: Accidents everywhere. Peeing inside minutes after coming in from outside. You're exhausted from constant vigilance and cleaning. You're worried your puppy will never "get it."

Our Approach:

  • Create a realistic toilet schedule based on your puppy's age and your lifestyle

  • Teach you to read your puppy's "I need to go" signals

  • Identify and address any underlying issues (anxiety, overexcitement)

  • Set up your home environment for success with a consistent routine that actually works

Timeline: Most puppies show significant improvement within 3-5 days. Complete reliability comes with physical maturity (usually 3-5 months).

Important: Punishment doesn't work for toilet training - it just teaches puppies to hide when they need to go. We'll show you positive methods that actually work.

TRAIN YOUR PUPPY EARLY TO HELP YOUR NEW FRIEND BECOME A CALM AND HAPPY PUPPY

🦷 Puppy Biting, Nipping & Mouthing Driving You Crazy?

The Problem: Your puppy bites your hands, feet, clothes. It hurts! Children are scared. Visitors are uncomfortable. You've tried yelping, redirecting to toys, and nothing seems to work. You're worried this aggression will continue.

Our Approach:

  • Teach bite inhibition (soft mouth) before stopping biting entirely

  • Teach your puppy what they CAN do, not just what they can't

  • Address common triggers and give you practical techniques that actually work

Timeline: Improvement within the session, resolution within a week with consistency. Chewing inappropriate items is also resolved by 4-5 months of age with proper guidance (management techniques will also be discussed in the session).

Red Flags: If your puppy is growling, showing teeth, or the biting seems fearful or defensive (not playful), we need to address this immediately. This is rare but important to catch early.

😢 Puppy Crying, Whining & Separation Anxiety?

The Problem: Your puppy cries when you leave the room. Howls when you go to work. Can't settle in their crate or bed. You're sleep-deprived from nighttime crying. You're worried about annoying neighbours.

Why Puppies Cry: They've just been separated from everything they know - mum, siblings, familiar smells.. But we can help them build confidence and independence.

Our Approach:

  • They're genuinely distressed – we’ll help you to create a safe, comfortable space your puppy actually likes

  • Build positive associations with alone time gradually

  • Address nighttime crying with practical, kind solutions

Timeline: Most puppies settle significantly within 3-7 days. Some anxious puppies need 2-3 weeks.

What We DON'T Do: We don't recommend leaving puppies to "cry it out" without addressing the underlying anxiety. That's cruel and can make separation anxiety worse.

🏠 Creating a Puppy-Friendly Home Environment

Beyond the Basics: Toilet training and biting get all the attention, but there's so much more your puppy needs to learn for a harmonious household.

We'll Cover:

  • Appropriate Chew Toys vs. Forbidden Items - Preventing Destructive Behaviour. Crate Training (if you want it) – How to set it up for which purpose, making the crate a happy place, not a punishment

  • Play Boundaries - What's appropriate play vs. too rough

  • House Rules That Work - No jumping on furniture? Off-limits rooms? Let's establish them now

  • Meeting Other Pets - Introducing your puppy to resident cats, dogs, or other animals safely

  • Puppy-Proofing - What dangers you might have missed

🎓 Early Obedience Training - Yes, Even for Baby Puppies!

Many people don't realise you can start obedience training immediately!

Our gentle, motivational methods mean you'll begin teaching basic commands in your very first session - and puppies love it! Training provides mental stimulation, builds confidence, and strengthens your bond.

What We'll Start Teaching:

  • Name Recognition (the foundation of everything)

  • Basic commands and Off-Leash Control at Home - Yes, really! Even baby puppies can learn this

  • Setting boundaries - building patience and impulse control

  • Appropriate play and perhaps even basic tricks

Why Start Early: The younger your puppy learns that training is fun and rewarding, the easier all future training becomes. Plus, a mentally tired puppy is a well-behaved puppy!

Phase 2: Real-World Skills (Follow-Up Session)

  2. 1.5-Hour Follow-Up Lesson - Taking training to the streets and parks

Our Follow-Up Session Covers:

  • Loose Leash Walking - Stop puppy pulling before it becomes a habit

  • Confidence Building Around Other Dogs - Stop barking, lunging, or fearfulness

  • Polite Greetings With People - No jumping, calm hellos

  • Exposure to Real-World Environments - Cars, bikes, crowds, noises

Why This Matters: Dogs who miss proper socialisation during the critical window (8-16 weeks) often develop fear and reactivity later. We help you socialise safely and effectively.

Why Start Puppy Training Early?

The Critical Socialisation Window: Puppies have a brief window (roughly 8-16 weeks) when they're naturally curious and adaptable. After this window closes, new experiences can become frightening rather than exciting.

Early Training Prevents:

  • Separation anxiety and destructive behaviour

  • Fear-based reactivity and aggression

  • Lifelong toilet training struggles

  • Pulling on leash as an adult dog

  • Jumping on people

  • Resource guarding and possessiveness

  • Noise phobias and anxiety

Early Training Creates:

  • Confidence in new situations

  • A strong bond between you and your puppy

  • Good habits that last a lifetime

  • A calm, well-adjusted adult dog

  • A puppy who LOVES learning

The Bottom Line: It's infinitely easier to teach a puppy the right habits than to fix bad habits in an adult dog. A small investment now saves years of frustration.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I start puppy training? Ideally within 24-48 hours of bringing your puppy home. The earlier we establish good habits, the easier everything becomes. We can start training from 8 weeks of age.

Isn't my puppy too young for training? Not at all! Puppies start learning from the moment they arrive. The question is: will they learn good habits or bad ones? Early training is gentle, fun, and age-appropriate. We're not expecting perfection - we're building foundations.

What if I've had my puppy for a few weeks already and problems have started? That's completely fine! It's still early enough to correct course quickly. The longer problems persist, the harder they are to fix, so book soon.

How long until my puppy is fully trained? Puppy training is a journey, not a destination. You'll see major improvements within 1-2 weeks, but complete reliability comes with consistency. We give you the tools to continue training as they grow.

Can I bring my puppy to group classes instead? Group classes can be valuable for socialisation, but they're not ideal for problem-solving. In a group setting, your puppy is distracted, you get limited individual attention, and specific issues (like toilet training at YOUR house) can't be addressed. We recommend in-home training first, then group classes for socialisation.

What if my puppy seems aggressive (growling, snapping)? This is very important to address immediately. While most puppy behaviour is normal, aggression needs early intervention. Book a session right away so we can assess and address this before it becomes a bigger problem.

My puppy is perfect during the day but terrible at night. Can you help? Absolutely! Nighttime behaviour is often about anxiety, routine, and expectations. We'll create a bedtime routine that works for your whole household.

Do you use puppy pads or train to go outside? We can do either - it depends on your situation. Apartment dwellers might need pad training or balcony training. Houses with yards typically train directly to outdoors. We'll create a plan that suits your living situation.

How do I prepare for the first session? Just have your puppy at home and be ready to learn! A list of specific concerns helps us prioritise. If you have multiple family members, having everyone present is ideal so everyone learns the same techniques.

Puppy Training Referrals

"We enjoyed a quality two hour session with Maria from Mutts with Manners on a Saturday afternoon. Maria turned up well prepared for the session and is both professional and approachable - our puppy immediately responded to her (as did we). As new puppy owners, we wanted to make sure we had all the tools to set our puppy up for the best possible life. We all feel that after the session with Maria, we have learned a lot - both our puppy and his parents are happy and have a great toolkit now for puppy life! Will certainly be back for refresher training. Thanks again."

"I would like to start with a big Thank You. Misty and I really enjoyed puppy training. We learnt so much and lots of great tips. What I liked is I felt I could talk to you and ask you anything and you had great advice to help us through. Thanks so much"

Julie, Brent & Misty

"We made various attempts to take Indie to puppy training school where the classes were more like a battle with our dog as opposed to an enjoyable learning experience. Then we were very happy to meet you and join together to train our beautiful new pup. Your advice and assistance in training was comparable to none and the difference in the behaviour of Indie was noticeable in 2 weeks. We look forward to seeing you soon."
